1.0 out of 5 stars You REALLY don't need these., September 15, 2011
JR (Saratoga, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Set of 2 batteries for the Splash-Proof Thermapen
The Thermapen already comes with batteries. They will last for 1500 hours. If you left the Thermapen on for an hour a day every day, they would last for over four years. However, the Thermapen has auto-off so the original batteries should last even longer. I didn't buy these so maybe they are decent batteries but you really don't need them. I gave these a single star because I think somebody is trying to make a buck that you don't really need to spend. The CR2032 battery is very common and you can buy them almost anywhere. I see these are not offered on amazon by Thermoworks so they won't even come with the thermapen shipment so why buy them? Order them in five years when you finally need them. Then you won't have to hunt through the house to remember where you put them.

1.0 out of 5 stars Really!, April 27, 2012
This review is from: Set of 2 batteries for the Splash-Proof Thermapen
Jeez, just do a simple Google search and you can get CR 2032 batteries for as low as .22 cents a piece! No, I'm not talking about unknown brands. Never, and I mean NEVER purchase batteries from the manufacturer of any given product as you'll only get ripped off. Mind you, I have the Thermapen and I absolutely LOVE it, but I'll just never fathom the idea that so many people feel that the batteries needed for any given product are specially made for that product and that you MUST order them from the place you purchased your item from.

I bought these because Thermapens have traditionally gone through batteries fast. But the new ones are many times more efficient, so you may as well wait until the LCD starts getting weak before you order new ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Accurate and fast enough for commercial use., April 9, 2011
Patrick P. - See all my reviews
This review is from: CDN ProAccurate Quick-Read Waterproof Pocket Thermometer (Kitchen)
This thermometer is very accurate and fast enough to save time in the professional kitchen. I get an accurate enough estimation within five to ten seconds, and a precise temperature within twenty seconds. For anyone that thinks it is slow, please compare it to a dial "instant read" thermometer. It is indeed waterproof. I have dunked it many times in a gallon of water to get a temp from the middle. Boiling reads at 211.8 degrees F, 100 degrees C.

This one takes it's time getting a reading, but it does get the temp from the tip instead of 1" up. For this reason and the accuracy I give it 4 stars. -1 star for speed.

I've had the Polder 362-90 for about 5 years. I purchased it after seeing Alton Brown using one on the Food Channel show "Good Eats". Now, I'd be lost without it. It takes all the guesswork out of roasting chicken or turkey or a roast beef or whatever else you care to cook in your oven.

You insert the metal probe into whatever you're cooking, set the target temperature and start roasting. When your roast reaches the desired temperature, the Polder will beep to let you know. Perfectly cooked. No wiggling Mrs. Chicken's legs, no pressing on the roast, no "Gee, is it done? I'm not sure." It couldn't be easier.

It has a countdown timer (but not a clock) as well. The back of the main unit has 2 strong magnets which allow it to be attached to any metallic surface, vertical or horizontal. The LCD pivots, so no matter where you put the unit, you can tilt the LCD to make it easy to read. A slide switch on the back allows you to change between Farenheit and... Read more

I bought two timers, this Poulder and a 6 buck Taylor. The Taylor was for timing things that take under 10 minutes and I could set next to the outdoor BBQ. The Poulder was for more complex stuff like actually telling the temperature of the meat (or fish or whatever) when it's in the oven. It works. It works beautifully. My wife loves it.

BUT, this is our second one. The first lasted about four years before the tabs that allow it to sit upright on a countertop either wore out or broke. That meant that it couldn't be seen straight on unless you used the magnetic backing and "pasted" it on the range. I don't know if that will happen again. I don't know if it's a design flaw. It's plastic, so maybe four years is more than I should have expected. The timer still worked, and I suppose Poulder would have replaced it if I wanted to go to the trouble. Giving them the benefit of the doubt and the fact that it does work very well, 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Thermometer/timer I've used, January 6, 2006
Frank Popp (Fairbanks, Alaska) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Polder Original Cooking All-In-One Timer/Thermometer (Kitchen)
I've been using this for at least 10 years and I love it. It's only on it's second set of batteries and it's used almost every day. I haven't had any of the problems with the probe that I've read about and that also gets used frequently--probably at least once a week.

I'm particularly impressed with the fact that it's been left out in the rain several times while attached to the smoker, gotten full of water and as soon as it's dried out it's been as good as new. It's hard to read when the display is full of water.....

This is a terrific value for the money. I bought a back up several years ago thinking my original one must be close to reaching the end of it's useful life, but it's still in the box.
