I've tried out a number of timers, but this is only one that has an alarm that's really as loud as advertised. I tried an OXO (usually a quality product), but they decided to extend their "soft" design trademark to the timer buttons. A disaster. Soft, mushy buttons, with no tactile feedback to let you know when they've been properly pressed. Then I tried a timer with a remote alert unit. Way too complicated. You had to store the remote in the back of the base when not in use, or the battery would run down. Also, the remote didn't constantly check for a signal. It could be almost a full minute late in alerting you that time was up. That was another battery saving feature.The ThermoWorks timer (made by a company that also makes industrial grade temperature meters) has none of those limitations. First off, it IS big. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that these hold up to their splash proof claim(water submersion is not recommend per the manufacturer)and can be easily wiped clean...a big must in the commercial restaurant business. The buttons are simple, and easy to use. There are 4 volume settings and can be deafening on high which is great in a loud environment (we had to turn them down due to customers commenting about the loud beeping). We ordered 6 of these...Only one had a "start button" which was didn't work well and one that stopped beeping after 1 month, but the ThermoWorks customer service is great. They're sending an RA out so I can return it without any problems.Update: 1 year later after heavy use: Although these were good functional timers. They couldn't hold up commercial use. This one is larger than the 'average' timer, but still has magnets that stay on my stove. I'm not always in the kitchen while I'm using a timer, so I love the loud ring. Even though it says it's waterproof--that doesn't mean the shower, best in the kitchen or while taking a nap! I was searching for a Sunbeam, because it was the one that was the loudest of the four others I had purchased. I used the Sunbeam so often that the small buttons stopped working after 18 months--now I'm glad it broke. As I was searching Amazon for that timer this ThermoWorks came up--answer to my wishes.
