Rated #1 by Cooks Illustrated and Cuisine at Home. I have owned several instant read thermometers, all disappointing. They're gone now. The read element is in the very tip of the needle, and only there, so you can precisely target the exact spot that you want to read...and it reads in less than a second. It's perfect, not one complaint. Ask the chef in a fancy restaurant what he or she uses. I found it always to be the Thermapen. The problems for me are 4-fold. (1) It is designed for a right handed person with the temperature on the left so I have to hold it in my right hand, no biggie. (2) The key when cooking is to push it into the meat the right depth which is not easy to do. (3) You cannot put it into the oven since it would melt. (4) It's expensive. Having said all that I would still buy it. (2) is the biggest problem for me, the tip is necked down for about the last 1/2 inch so if the steak is 1 inch thick no problem but what if it's not ? I'm thinking of putting marks in different colors for different thicknesses which is what the manufacturer should have done. Quick & accurate reading have made my barbecue outings a lot easier to manage. No more uncertainties about whether food is cooked thoroughly. I just check the internal meat temperature. It has really saved on my cook time as I no longer need to lift the hood as often. Only one complaint. There is an auto shut off mode which I don't have a problem with as it is designed to save battery life. Problem is after unit shuts off, user needs to fold in the needle and fold back out to reset. This can be inconvenient sometimes especially if your hands are full at the range. Here's a brilliant idea - Why not just add a reset or "on" push button on the handle instead. Nevertheless, I love this thermometer and hope to get many years of use. |
